We are made in the image of God, consisting of three parts: body, soul, and spirit.
Body
Your body is your flesh; it is made of earth and craves carnal things. It is deeply influenced by your soul (Genesis 2:7).
Soul
Your soul is where your memories are stored, where trauma gets logged, agreements with the enemy are made, and where demon oppression can occur (Psalm 42:5). The health and cleanliness of your soul seriously impact the choices you make, the behaviors you engage in, and what you struggle with, such as anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts, intrusive thoughts, fear, anger, rage, sexual immorality, witchcraft/rebellion, jealousy, idolatry, busyness, gossip, offense, and addiction (Matthew 11:28-30).
Spirit
Your spirit is eternal (Ecclesiastes 12:7). It is the part of you that is your true self, and if you are saved, it is in perfect communion with God’s Holy Spirit (Romans 8:16). Your spirit fully knows and believes the truth and enjoys unbroken fellowship with the Lord (1 Corinthians 2:12-13). You may have heard it said, “Everyone has a God-shaped hole in their heart that only He can fill.” That’s actually your spirit recognizing the truth that Jesus is King and that God is a kind Father (John 14:6). Your spirit, knowing this truth, is waiting for your soul (your mind and emotions) to understand that we are the righteousness of Christ and are already fully healed (2 Corinthians 5:21).
However, our body (our flesh) is highly influenced by our soul, which is susceptible to oppression and at war with our spirit (Galatians 5:17). This is why we desperately need to renew our minds and take authority over ourselves. Here is a quick and easy place to start:
– Command our spirit to follow the leadership of the Holy Spirit (Romans 8:14).
– Command our spirit to lead our soul.
– Command our soul to follow the leadership of our spirit, which has been commanded into submission to the Holy Spirit.
If you are wondering, yes, it is absolutely biblical to speak to your own soul and command it to do things (Psalm 103:1).
So do it. Don’t waste another minute. You can live in freedom by the power of the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:1).
